non.object - Design Fiction

Non.Object was established in spring of 2006 with the goal of conceiving and realising design experiences at a fundamentally new level.

q: so, what is non.object?

a: non.object is the space between you and the object.

Looking beyond the object itself. Inside and out - focusing on the ethos that defines the being of an object. Create products that move you, that challenge conventional wisdom and embrace uncommon sense.

CUin5 // Superpractical mobile phone // MADE IN MIND

One of many ideas explored in the book, CUin5 was inspired after working with countless big company design specs that all outlined more or less the same thing: a ‘ideally-practical’ interface with the all-too-typical feature set, driven mainly by new technological feature. But CUin5 pushes this notion to the new level. In this example we look at the ‘post-display era’ in which you talk with your device and device talks to you, no need for screen anymore. How about a handset in which every face carries a keypad, microphone, and speaker? Imagine grabbing it quickly – from inside your bag, from off a shelf, from under a car seat – and freely interacting with it without needing to turn it over or align it right side up? This was the line of thinking that over several years led me to creation of CUin5. Whichever surface you touch first becomes active and aglow, while the others lock in place. Talk from a wide surface. Talk from the edge. Talk differently each time you answer the phone. See beyond its limitations and read the poetry between the lines.

Tarati // Touchless Communication // MADE IN MIND

There is still a block of material separating you from the other person you are trying to reach using phone… a phone itself.
…Connecting to loved ones by way of mobile phone technology is a magical experience unto itself. Simply by touching keys, in order, on a keypad, we’re able to make another’s phone ring and then engage in meaningful conversation, from wherever we may be, to wherever they are. It’s poetry in motion, and yet the devices we use to reflect this experience do not communicate poetically. Tarati (in Sanskrit, meaning “through”) is a step towards rewriting cell phone history. Tarati enables the user to connect with others by passing fingers, in order, through key holes. This action of dialing alone is a more magical experience and, hence, more indicative of what’s really happening beyond the visible realm. … Tarati beckons the user to “touch” someone without physically touching a single key. Its design reflects human connectivity in a less material/mechanical, more sensual, way. Tarati is a subtle device, but ever-so-powerful in its fearlessness.
